conversations and little thoughts at 1am

It's come up time and again in discussions with friends about what they see in or are attracted to in partners or friends, and part of that is the ability to talk to them. Seems obvious enough, but it's not just about daily conversation, or even communicating emotions effectively, but also about building on each contribution and not necessarily agreeing, but getting to a point where either or both feel more enriched by the exchange. And included in that ability is the acknowledgment that consensus isn't always realistic. That contention can foster understanding, but also that contention for contention's sake can be plain obnoxious. And that even if tempers flare and voices rise, a little bit of meditation afterwards does no injury to your dignity.

And sometimes the conversations we need to have the most are with ourselves. I have a tendency to digest emotional situations by fixing my attention on something else, which normally aids my general state of happiness but also slams down any opportunity for understanding why I feel the way I do and if anything should be done. As peaceful as passivity is, it also fuels that inertia that's ensuring the accomplishment of absolutely nothing. And on that note I'm thankful not just to see that quality in another person, but also for that little bit of spark within us that drives this desire to understand, to know and to prove, to accept and to discover, in some senses a kind of curiosity. (Waterland, anyone?)

On another note, I remember writing in my very first post a bit of a dig about 'finding yourself', but ironically on looking back it seems like that's exactly what my posts have been documenting. This is probably going to end up a sounding board for all the little things that go through my mind in the middle of the night but bear with me.

2/3 of my way through sifting through my pile of bahamas photos, but my favourites by far are from our day at the pink beach.
